Professor Eric Opoku Mensah is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC). His four (4) year term of office began in May 2025.
Professor Mensah is a distinguished scholar in Rhetoric and Media Studies. He earned both his Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) and Master of Philosophy degrees in English Language from the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana. He further obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Rhetoric Studies from the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. His doctoral research focused on the political communication of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, with a particular interest in Nkrumah’s pan-African rhetorical strategies and their role in nation-building and citizenship formation in Ghana and Africa.
Prof. Opoku Mensah has an extensive academic portfolio, having participated in numerous international and local conferences and workshops in political rhetoric, communication studies, and higher education. He serves as a reviewer for several local and international journals and has been an External Assessor for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and an External Examiner for various universities in Ghana. He is also a frequent visiting scholar at Uppsala University in Sweden.
In his administrative career, Prof. Opoku Mensah has held several significant positions: Deputy Rector and later Rector of the Institute of Journalism, a constituent institute of UniMAC; Head of the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Cape Coast (2016–2020) and Member of various Boards and Committees, including the University of Cape Coast Governing Council, Ghana Institute of Journalism Governing Council, Academic Board, and College Board.
He has also served as the National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and held leadership roles within the UTAG chapter at the University of Cape Coast.
