Admission Requirements

A. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION


To be admitted into the Ph.D. in Media and Communication programme, applicants must possess:

  1. A master’s degree in a communication-related field from an accredited university with a CGPA of 3.0 and above. Applicants without research may be required to audit additional courses.
  2. MA/MSc with research in a communication-related field from an accredited university.
  3. An MPhil in a communication-related field from an accredited university.
  4. An MFA in Film and Television Production from an accredited university.
  5. At least a grade B in the master’s Dissertation / Thesis.
  6. Present a 3,000-word research proposal of an intended area of study as part of the application process.
  7. Pass a selection interview.

Foreign applicants from accredited institutions with equivalent qualifications will be considered for admission after GTEC’s evaluation of their certificates.

Mode of Delivery

The programme will be delivered in a blended mode of virtual and in-person lectures in collaboration with seasoned scholars with international repute from;

    • Virginia Tech University, U.S.A
    • Nelson Mandela University, South Africa

Programme Specialisation

Prospective Applicants for the PhD in Media and Communication may specialise in any of the following areas or strands.

  1. Media and Journalism
  2. Political Communication
  3. Public Relations
  4. Marketing and Advertising
  5. Development Communication
  6. Theatre Studies

 

B. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (Political Communication Management)


Applicants must possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a Second-Class Lower Division (2nd Class Lower) or better
  2. A Master of Arts Degree from an accredited university
  • Pass an entrance examination and/or a selection interview.
  1. Submit a transcript of his/her academic record.
  2. Submit a 4–5-page research proposal based on a relevant topic of interest.

 

C. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (Strategic Public Relations Management)


Applicants must possess:

i. M.A. in Communication (Public Relations option) with a CGPA of not less than 3.5.
ii. A CGPA of 3.0 will also be accepted if the student has demonstrated a strong acumen for research but could not obtain a CGPA of 3.5.
iii. Applicant(s) must pass a selection interview.

 

D. MASTER OF ARTS


i. A bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of Media, Arts and Communication      (UniMAC) or any accredited/recognised University, with at least Second-Class Lower Division.

Or

ii. A bachelor’s degree in other disciplines from any reputable University with at least Second-Class Lower Division.

iii. A bachelor’s degree from any reputable University with a Third Class and 3 years relevant working experience.

 

E. DEGREE


SSSCE Holders

Applicants must possess passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects.  Applicants to the BA Translation programme should have French as part of their electives.

 

WASSCE Holders

Applicants must possess passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects. Applicants to the BA Translation programme should have French as part of their electives.

Final year WASSCE candidates are eligible to apply as awaiting results applicants. Applicants are, however, to upload their WASSCE results upon release by the West African Examination Council.

GCE Advanced Level Holders

Applicants must possess a General Certificate of Examinations (GCE) ‘A’ Level Grade E or better in three (3) subjects, at least, one of which should be Grade D or better Credit passes i.e., Grade 6 or better in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level (‘O” Level) subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject, for non-science students. 

Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE)
Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, or Social Studies in the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE). Applicants may be admitted to level 200.


F. TOP-UP DEGREE [LEVEL 200 AND 300 WEEKEND]


i. A UniMAC Diploma with a final CGPA of 2.5 and above or an equivalent Diploma from an accredited communications training institution with a CGPA of 3.0 and above or with an average of Grade B can apply.

ii. However, an applicant with a UniMAC Diploma with a final CGPA between 1.80-2.49 or an equivalent Diploma from an accredited communications training institution could be considered for a fee-paying option.

iii. Diploma holders with a CGPA of 1.79 and below can apply to be admitted to level 200.

iv. UniMAC Diploma holders with NABPTEX/CTVET certification are eligible to apply for level 200 top-up.

v. Diploma holders with a Final Grade Point Average of 3.00 from other disciplines are eligible to apply.

vi. Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) can apply.

vii. Final Year Diploma students are eligible to apply as awaiting results applicants. (Certificates and Transcripts should, however, be provided to complete the application process)

 

G. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA


SSSCE Holders

Applicants must possess six (6) passes (A-D) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics. For areas of specialisation, three (3) of the passes must be in relevant subjects.  Applicants to the HND in Bilingual secretaryship programme should have French as part of their electives.

WASSCE Holders

Applicants must possess six (6) passes (A1-D7) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics and must possess a minimum of C6 in any three (3) of the passes relevant to the area of specialisation.    


H. DIPLOMA


SSSCE Holders

Applicants must possess six (6) passes (A-D) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics. For areas of specialisation, three (3) of the passes must be in relevant subjects. 


WASSCE Holders

Applicants must possess six (6) passes (A1-D7) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics and must possess a minimum of C6 in any three (3) of the passes relevant to the area of specialisation.  

 

I. MATURE ENTRY


Persons wishing to enter the University of Media, Arts and Communication as Mature Students must be at least 25 years old and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is at least 5 years old at the time of application.

Applicants will be considered for admission on passing a special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics, Aptitude Test/General Paper, and French.

Successful applicants after the examination may be admitted to a degree or diploma, depending on their performance.
