The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) was established by an Act of Parliament Act 2020 (1059) that merged the erstwhile Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) established in 1959, the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) established in 1978 and the Ghana Institute of Languages established in 1961, into one university.
The enactment was a bold step to fulfil a long-standing desire and advocacy by the Constituent Institutes to merge into a full-fledged University and improve on their extremely intertwined offerings to their students and academia.
Since the merger, structures are being put in place to catapult UniMAC to take up its place in the media, arts and communication space. It has held two congregations and has brokered relationships with key stakeholders to garner support for its core mandate. Recently in November 2024, it launched its doctoral programme, a PhD in media and communication, to bridge the gap between professionalism and academia at the tertiary level of education.
UniMAC is uniquely positioned to deliver excellence in Media, Arts and Communications education at the tertiary level.
Graduation ceremonies are major events in the University that celebrate the successful completion of a course of study and marks the awarding of a degree, diploma or certificate by UniMAC. They are solemn moments for graduates, their families, and the UniMAC community to gather and recognize the achievements of students.
Significantly at UniMAC, it is symbolic for us, as an Institution that churns out more women graduates than men. The ladies keep their mortar boards on and the gentlemen doff off theirs. For us, this symbolism, affirms the dignity of the female, confirming that, females as beauties in their inner selves, with brains and we must respect their dignity and appreciate their intelligence at all times.
The media, arts and communication’s sectors are made up of more females and what better way to celebrate this than at a UniMAC graduation.
Our future is shaped by our distinctive past and uniqueness. As three institutions, now together as UniMAC, our alumni connections lie in the strength of our numbers as former students of the erstwhile GIJ, Institute of Languages and NAFTI.
Building a strong alumni community provides a great opportunity for us to learn, share ideas and promote professionalism in the media, arts and communication sector for meaningful impact.
Stay up to date on news and upcoming events from the UniMAC, networking sessions and other gatherings. Get closer to the University, old classmates; share your experiences, and network with like-minded individuals from all over the world.
We appreciate you.
